Magneto is a monster. He’s not a monster because he’s Jewish, or because he’s an Auschwitz survivor. He’s a monster because of the actions he’s undertaken, the people he’s killed, the lives he’s destroyed. None of that has anything to do with one racist guy somewhere in the world.

I think using the term “monster” is lazy writing. It’s dismissive and takes a three dimensional character and degrades them to a one dimensional trope. He becomes a cliche. It’s like taking everything he has done and just saying “he’s crazy” that just belittles everything he has been through, and attributes his actions not to his experiences or even defect of character, but just a scapegoat trope. Magneto isn’t a monster, but he has done monstrous thing. One would think a creative force for Marvel would know this. But I guess not.

I wouldn’t call this lazy writing. The use of the word “monster” is interpretive. Other heroes in marvel have been called monsters, like Wolverine, Punisher, and Ghost Rider (who is quite monstrous) I think are good examples. Just because he’s being labeled as a monster here doesn’t mean he hasn’t earned other more positive labels by now, it’s just a way for us to be reminded that this was a major marvel villain (on par with Dr Doom and the Red Skull)

Monster is lazy writing. It does not adequately describe his character as IS dismissive and IS offensive. He doesn’t need to be a martyr or a monster. He isn’t one extreme or anther, and to chalk him up as a “monster” with no context is BAD WRITING. call him a “monster” with context and effort, or say he is a man who has done “monstrous things” and leave it at that. It’s either or. You can’t just throw “monster” or “crazy” out there unqualified and say you are leaving it up to “creative interpretation” than wonder why everyone interprets that as offensive and lazy.

Yes, it does adequately describe his character. Magneto is a Jewish revenge fantasy and nothing more. He’s killed far more people than “evil” villains like Dr. Doom, Red Skull, Hydra, etc, but gets a pass just because he’s Jewish. Interestingly enough, his Jewishness was a RETCON in the 1980s. Before that, when he was a white man, it was okay for him to be pure evil and chaos, but after adding in his ethnic flair, suddenly he has to be a sympathetic, tragic, tortured soul. Sorry,  folks, but Magneto is a horrible person with no regard for life. I wonder why Marvel hasn’t killed him off yet. He’s worse than the Joker.

Magneto has HELLA PTSD. He watched his people, Jews, get systematically blamed and eradicated for simply existing by Nazies while the rest of the world either supported this or looked the other way. Yes, when he saw that happening again with Mutants he went a little revenge-rampage on them. BECAUSE MUTANTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A METAPHOR FOR PERSECUTED MINORITIES! Erik saw what happened in the past happening again in the present, and he said “never again” and did some arguably bad things with questionable mental stability in retaliation. He is not “just as bad” as the Joker, no. They are not even the same. The Joker is literally JUST a sociopath. He FEELS nothing. Magneto on the other hand feels EVERYTHING. THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING. And how are you supposed to make a racist Nazi Jew-killing hate monger into a sympathetic villain? How am I supposed to sympathize  to him? I am German and Slovak. Tell me, I would like to know how I am supposed to look at the things my distant family and country have done and be like “but they had just reason to kill all those people because [insert your reason here]” please, enlighten me. Because all these years I was under the impression that Antisemitism is bad.

If the Joker’s “Killing Joke” origin is to be believed, he was a regular, good man with a pregnant wife. His wife and unborn baby died in a freak accident, Joker fell into some chemicals, and he went completely insane. And that’s not even going into the fact that he’s never been given a chance at proper mental treatment because Gotham City is a hellhole. Magneto chose to be an evil scumbag. I know people with PTSD and they aren’t mass-murderers.

Him not getting adequate treatment? Seriously? He lives in an asylum. Her is under 24 hour care when he’s not loose. Gotham has a strange inability to keep the criminally insane contained, but that doesn’t mean they are not giving him psychological help while there. That’s Harley’s origin. She was his doctor… So yeah, shut up.

And Magneto Chose? CHOSE? Really? You argue Joker can have less tragic things happen to him and “go insane” and it’s not a choice or to be held against him, but Erik can go through worse and go insane but it IS a choice. Person, is you serious? Really? Are you honestly THAT selective in who does and doesn’t have PTSD and whether or not it makes them accountable? Joker in most canon and current canon is just a sociopath who is also a woman beating misogynist and an all around awful sicko.

PTSD…not everyone with PTSD are mass murderers, but a LOT of mass murderers have PTSD. If you cannot understand how that works, then I cannot help you. But then again, you do seem to by a nazi sympathizer so I’m certain you ARE really that dumb.

 A retcon? Sort of like Magneto’s Jewish ancestry, huh? Anyway, who cares if it’s a retcon, it’s still a story and a version of the Joker. And if you think Arkham Asylum is a legitimate mental health institution, you’re kidding yourself. It’s a damn Halloween house where the inmates are treated like something out of the 1800s. There’s NO WAY this institution would work in 21st century America. No way. Have you read a Batman comic, played an Arkham game, or anything? Do you know what Arkham Asylum is? 

What you’re basically saying is that Joker isn’t excused because his tragedy was smaller than Magneto’s? Okay. Whatever. Forget I brought up Joker and let’s examine Magneto on his own……he’s excused from killing thousands of men, women, and children because his own family died? Isn’t that hypocritical? He’s literally turning around and doing the same thing that was supposedly done to him. Yet, people admire him. Talk about sickos. 

yes, i actually do know a thing or two about Joker. Me bringing up the fact that Killing Game is a retcon because YOU brought up Erik being Jewish is a retcon. See? Dude, you don’t know me, I get that, but I have been a Magneto fan for decades and have actually watched him go from megalomaniac mass murderer, to anti-hero, to head of the Xavier School, to the king of his own country, to watching 16 million Genoshian mutants killed, to being a tragic martyr, House of M, to being 1 of 200 mutants left on earth, to having broken powers and finding out he isn’t the father of the Twins. and then everything in-between. Asteroid M was involved several time. also a cloning. a de-aging, and apparently he fucked Rogue. I know what he has done. Some of the stuff he has done is MONSTROUS but that doesn’t make him a monster. See, this whole argument was about literary language. To use the word “monster” with out any quantifiers is dismissive and BAD WRITING, but to say he has done “monstrous things” acknowledges his flaws and horrible deeds without belittling what lead him to those actions and isn’t bad writing. 

you are riding your little nazimobile around in circles around the subject. the subject being using the word “monster” is LAZY. Honestly, it’s lazy if you use it on the Joker, it’s lazy if you use it on Magneto.

Brevoort’s the kind of guy that doesn’t understand the X-Men franchise, and more importantly, doesn’t WANT to understand the X-Men franchise. He’s in charge of the Avengers books. His entire area of interest is the Avengers books, and trying to put them on a higher pedestal.

Trying to make Magneto out to be a monster, and nothing BUT a monster, is the name of the game. If he does that, and if he’s successful in tricking people into agreeing with that view, then he can further diminish the X-Men franchise. In his twisted view, diminishing the X-Men franchise benefits the Avengers franchise, and it’s somehow impossible to treat both with respect.

He won’t admit this, and he’ll proclaim he’s offended by such a suggestion, but his attitude and actions say a hell of a lot more than whatever words he writes down.
